Voltarum OpenWRT buyers guide

About Voltarum OpenWRT buyers guide

Voltarum OpenWRT buyers guide helps you choose hardware for OpenWrt, the open-source firmware for routers.

The official OpenWrt Table of Hardware is an amazing resource, but it is written for people who already know what a target, a factory image or an 8/64 device is. We turn that information into clear buying guidance:

  • Does this router support OpenWrt? And since which release?
  • Is installation easy? Or does it need a serial cable?
  • Is it powerful enough for WireGuard, SQM or a busy home?
  • Does it have enough RAM and flash to stay useful for years?
  • Would we buy it today, and what should you buy instead?

What we are, and what we are not

We are an independent publication. We are not part of the OpenWrt project, and nothing here replaces the official documentation: every router page links to its official device page and to the Firmware Selector, and you should follow those for the exact installation steps.

We are honest about what we know. Factual data (specifications, supported versions) is shown separately from our opinion (recommendations, scores, pros and cons). When we have not physically tested a router, the page says so. When there is no benchmark, we show “Benchmark not yet tested” instead of guessing.

How the site is funded

Some links to retailers are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. This pays for the site. It never changes which routers we recommend; see our affiliate disclosure and methodology.

Corrections

Hardware revisions change and OpenWrt moves fast. If you spot a mistake, please tell us: corrections are the most useful message we receive.
